Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer and younger brother of the late Princess Diana, is set to publish a new book titled Swan Song: Diana, My Sister on September 22. The book reflects on Diana’s life and the week surrounding her death from her brother’s perspective. On the 20th, the BBC reported Earl Spencer as saying that the media treatment of Prince Harry and Meghan bears a “similarity” to what Diana experienced during her lifetime.

Earl Spencer described the media coverage as having a “corrosive effect” on the couple’s lives, adding that “people should learn lessons from Diana’s example.”

Earl Spencer was interviewed by BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg at his home, Althorp Estate. When asked if Diana would have “empathized” with the public scrutiny facing Harry and Meghan, he said: “If you look at the articles in the tabloids about Diana and about Harry and Meghan, the content can be truly, deeply unpleasant. I think people should learn lessons from Diana’s example.”

Earl Spencer stated: “I am not here to speak for Harry and Meghan, but for anyone subjected to this kind of battering day in and day out, it inevitably has a corrosive effect on their lives.”

He also noted that Diana had been “deeply distressed” by such criticism and described the treatment of his nephew, Prince Harry, and his wife as “similar to the situation back then”—a state of affairs he called “sad.”

Earl Spencer also mentioned that while the media might perceive him as “taking Harry’s side,” he clarified: “I am on the side of my late sister’s two sons; whichever one it is, if they need any help, I will support them.”
